COLUMBUS—The Ohio Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 16, sponsored by State Senator Steve Wilson (R-Maineville) which establishes rules for drivers who see a vehicle on the roadside in distress.

"Ensuring the safety of all drivers is crucial for our state," said Senator Wilson. "Slowing down or moving over for a vehicle in distress is the least we can do for our fellow motorists. Not only will this bill prevent accidents from occurring and save lives in the process, but it will also eliminate any confusion for Ohioans who find themselves approaching a vehicle in distress."

This legislation requires drivers to make their best effort to slow down or move over when approaching a distressed vehicle, which is defined as a vehicle that is pulled over on the shoulder that is displaying hazard/blinking lights, flares, or some form of emergency signage. The bill does not increase or expand penalties on drivers who do not slow down or move over.
