COLUMBUS—Senator Steve Wilson (R-Maineville) was unanimously chosen to serve as chairman of the Joint Committee on Ohio College Affordability during today's inaugural meeting. The bipartisan committee is made up of five members of the Ohio Senate and five members of the Ohio House of Representatives who were respectively appointed by the Senate President and Speaker of the House.
"I am honored to help guide this committee toward a productive end, and look forward to working with my colleagues in both chambers to address the cost of higher education," said Wilson. "While a lot of work has been done by a number of task forces in the past, there is still much to be done. Students should have the ability to access an affordable education that will set them up for success for the rest of their lives."
The committee was created in the 132nd General Assembly's Biennial Operating Budget to study and develop strategies to reduce the cost of attending colleges and universities in Ohio.
During today's meeting, Chancellor Carey and his policy team from the Ohio Department of Higher Education gave a detailed overview of past and current initiatives to provide a starting point for the committee and a clear picture of where Ohio stands. The committee will continue to meet in the coming months to collaborate on suggestions, comments and concerns from leaders in the higher education community. The committee is expected to release a report of their findings by late September.
