Wilson Reminds Area Residents of Prescription Drug Take Back Day

COLUMBUS—State Senator Steve Wilson (R-Maineville) is reminding area residents that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will host its 15th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, April 28, 2018.
Take Back Day provides safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing expired and unused prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for diversion and abuse of medications. Last year the event had largest turnout since the beginning of the program. More than 260 sites throughout Ohio participated in the collection in October 2017, which netted 35,797 pounds of unused medications statewide. Nationally, Americans disposed of 912,305 pounds of unwanted medications. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
