Johnson, Gavarone Introduce Bill Protecting Second Amendment Rights

COLUMBUS—State Senators Terry Johnson (R-McDermott) and Theresa Gavarone (R-Huron) this week gave sponsor testimony on Senate Bill 293, a bill that would prohibit requiring gun owners to have firearm liability insurance or pay fees for the possession of firearms, firearm components, or ammunition.
“The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution not only grants us the right to keep and bear arms, it also states that this right shall not be infringed,” Johnson said. “Clearly, requiring a fee to own a firearm, or stipulating that a gun owner must carry insurance to simply own that firearm, qualify as blatant infringements. This bill seeks to ensure that this can never happen here in Ohio.” Recently, the San Jose City Council voted to require gun owners to purchase and carry liability insurance as well as pay an annual fee. Senate Bill 293 would protect against such infringements on Ohioans' constitutional right to bear arms.
"Gun-grabbing organizations are going across the country to make it tougher for Americans to exercise their 2nd amendment rights,” Gavarone said. “That won’t happen in Ohio while I’m here. Standing up for gun owners has always been a priority for me and this bill is a continuation of that work.”
