Legislation Protecting the Second Amendment Heads to Governor

COLUMBUS —The Ohio Senate agreed to amendments to Senate Bill 58, sponsored by State Senator Terry Johnson (R-McDermott) and State Senator Theresa Gavarone (R-Bowling Green), to ensure no Ohioan will be required to possess or purchase firearm liability insurance or pay a fee for the possession of a firearm, parts, components, ammunition, or a knife.

The bill was amended to include another bill sponsored by Johnson to protect Ohio’s firearm owners and retailers from financial discrimination. It will prevent the use of the International Organization for Standardization's new merchant code for identifying purchases at firearm retailers. This new code permits credit card companies to track lawful firearm purchases, violating the privacy of customers and businesses and threatening the Second Amendment rights of Americans.

"The right to keep and bear arms is coming under consistent and strong attacks, which will fundamentally harm our Constitution and our citizens," Johnson said. "Senate Bill 58 preserves the Second Amendment, protecting you and your family from overreaching attacks on your fundamental constitutional rights."
