Senator Johnson Introduces Bill Protecting Jewish Ohioans
COLUMBUS - State Senator Terry Johnson (R-McDermott) introduced legislation that will protect Jewish students from intimidation, harassment, and violence.
"We have seen turmoil on our college campuses as a result of protests over the conflict in Gaza, which have led to Jewish students being targeted and harassed. This type of hateful behavior toward people of a particular race or religious belief is, quite simply, unacceptable in the United States of America," Johnson said. "It is imperative that we protect these students, punish offenders, and ensure protests remain peaceful and respectful."
Senate Bill 297 would expand the offense of ethnic intimidation to include both riot and aggravated riot committed by reason of the race, color, religion, or national origin of another person or group of persons. The bill will also define antisemitism so state agencies can investigate and lead proceedings on these offenses.
"This legislation will give law enforcement and our public universities the tools they need to stop and deter anti-Semitic actions, and it will allow Jewish Ohioans to feel safe as they get their education," said the senator.
Senate Bill 297 must next be referred to a committee.
