Appalachian Caucus Holds First Meeting

COLUMBUS— The first meeting of the Ohio Legislative Appalachian Caucus was held on Wednesday, focused on bringing awareness and legislative solutions on issues specific to Ohio's Appalachian counties. Chaired by State Senator Tim Schaffer (R-Lancaster), the caucus will address broadband access, economic development, road infrastructure, and other issues Ohio's Appalachian communities are facing.
Director John Carey, from the Governor's Office of Appalachia spoke to the group during the inaugural meeting.
"I wan to thank Director Carey for being our guest speaker for our first meeting and lending his expertise that we may better serve our Appalachian counties," Schaffer said. "I look forward to continuing to meet and bring awareness to the unique issues our constituents in Appalachia face."
Director Carey discussed numerous topics, including fresh water access, highway transportation funding, and job growth in the region. The Governor’s Office of Appalachia serves to help distribute federal funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC).
The ARC is made up of 13 states in Appalachia. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine was named as one of the 2020 ARC States’ Co-Chair.
The members of the caucus include 8 state senators and 20 House members who represent the thirty-two counties in Ohio that are designated as Appalachian by the federal government.
