May is a time for celebration. The winter finally gives way to the warm sun, and we as a nation prepare for the celebrations of the summer to come. Let us not forget, however, those who have sacrificed everything to give us these warm days of freedom.

In the aftermath of the Civil War, several traditions in honoring fallen soldiers were merged into what we know today as Memorial Day. Americans now come together on the last Monday in May each year to honor service members who have fallen in the line of duty.

Those men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice did so not for personal glory or recognition, but for the protection of our country, the preservation of our freedoms and the love of their fellow service members. I can think of no greater act patriotism than for one to deny self in the name of freedom for others. I am deeply grateful and forever indebted to our soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

As we approach Memorial Day, let’s take some time to reflect on our nation’s veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice. Pray for their families, loved ones, and fellow service members who mourn for their loss. Let us not forget their names and their sacrifices.
