COLUMBUS—State Senator Tim Schaffer (R-Lancaster) today announced the unanimous passage of Senate Concurrent Resolution 1, which urges Congress to enact the Mark Takai Atomic Veterans Healthcare Parity Act, federal legislation that would ensure "Atomic Veterans" obtain proper medical care and assistance.

"As Americans, it is our duty to ensure the men and women who risk their lives receive the care they need after they complete their service," said Schaffer. "Congress must act quickly to provide 'Atomic Veterans' a standard of care that is responsive to the unique dangers they endured."

As a result of their military service and exposure to radiation, many of these individuals have developed cancer and other medical complications, yet have been excluded from the Radiation-Exposed Veterans Compensation Act, which passed in 1988.

Additionally, Schaffer applauded Pickerington American Legion Commander Dave England for his advocacy during the committee process.

Hawaii Congressman Mark Takai was a veteran of the U.S. Army and Hawaii Army National Guard who passed away in 2016 and was the original sponsor of the bill in the House of Representatives.
