COLUMBUS - State Senator Tim Schaffer (R-Lancaster) today announced several grants awarded throughout the 20th Senate District as part of the first round of funds from the Brownfield Remediation Program.
"Cleaning up brownfields is critical to revitalize contaminated and abandoned areas of our communities," Schaffer said. "These funds are the first of many that will help clean up and free space for future economic development."
Among the first round of funding, Fairfield County will receive $278,617 to test and remediate the former Bulk Petroleum Property. This property was first commercially developed in the 1960s and utilized for petroleum product storage and distribution until the late 1990s. Brownfield Remediation Funds will help assess the extent of any contamination, including groundwater and soil testing. After testing and needed remediation, this property would be once again developable for the city of Pickerington.
The Muskingum County Reutilization Corp. will receive $120,000 for asbestos abatement at Munson Elementary, which was built in the 1920s and used solely as an elementary school until 2005. The site has been vacant for 17 years and is in poor condition. The project will allow for asbestos abatement throughout the site. After cleanup, the county plans to rehabilitate the property as mixed-income residential units. The Reutilization Corp. will also receive $1,850,000 for the cleanup of the Mosaic Tile building built in 1894. These funds will help to remediate asbestos and lead paint present. After remediation, the buildings will be demolished, and the site will be prepared for redevelopment.
