COLUMBUS - State Senator Tim Schaffer (R-Lancaster) announced the Ohio Controlling Board released $70,790,981.81 for projects in Licking County, including funds for the new Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory at the Ohio Department of Agriculture campus in Reynoldsburg.

"I've been proud to support funding for projects that will benefit our farmers and all Ohioans," Schaffer said. "The funds released today will make a generational impact on our agricultural industry, giving our farmers more tools to succeed."

The Controlling Board released $65,655,221.68 for the construction of the new animal disease laboratory. The current laboratory provides more than 450 different diagnostic tests for food animals, equine, and other species in the defense against animal disease outbreaks. A new facility is needed to improve biosecurity and biosafety while expanding the testing capabilities offered.

The Controlling Board also released $467,999.99  for a new system to support pesticide testing and $300,307.14 for a modern pathology slide scanner at the current lab.

Additionally, $4,367,453 was released for improvements to the multiuse trail at Blackhand Gorge Nature Preserve. The project will reinforce the riverbank at three locations to keep it usable.

"Blackhand Gorge is a beautiful gem in Licking County with a rich history," Schaffer said. "This investment will ensure this amazing place stays accessible to residents and visitors for years to come."
