Schaffer Applauds Beginning of Historic USMCA Trade Deal

COLUMBUS—State Senator Tim Schaffer (R-Lancaster) expressed his support today for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) which becomes effective today. The USMCA marks the beginning of a more balanced trade relationship between the United States, Mexico, and Canada. "I am excited to see the USMCA become effective today and and begin creating a more level playing field for American workers," Schaffer said. "The USMCA fixes unfair trade agreements of the past, removes barriers for small businesses, and will encourage more goods and materials to be manufactured in the United States. This is a victory for jobs in Ohio and America." Canada and Mexico are the first and third largest exports markets for United States food and agricultural products, making up 28 percent of total food and agricultural exports in 2017. These exports support more than 325,000 American jobs. The USMCA is a 21st century, high-standard agreement that modernizes the 25-year-old NAFTA and supports mutually beneficial trade leading to freer markets, fairer trade, and robust economic growth in North America.
