COLUMBUS—The Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill 52, sponsored by State Senator Tim Schaffer (R-Lancaster), to name portions of U.S. Route 33 and Interstate 70 as the Congressman David Hobson Memorial Highway.

"Congressman Hobson was a dedicated public servant who was a mentor to many elected officials, including me," said Senator Schaffer. "He was truly committed to his family, community, state, and country, and whose life and legacy of public service deserves to be memorialized as a leading example to future generations of Ohioans."

Congressman Hobson's career in public service began with the Air National Guard when he was called up to active duty during the Berlin Wall Crisis in 1961. He would later serve in the Ohio Senate for 8 years, where he was elected to the positions of Majority Whip and President Pro Tempore by his colleagues. In 1990, Hobson was elected to represent Ohio's 7th Congressional District, a position he would hold until 2009.

"For 50 years, people in and around Fairfield County had been proposing the Lancaster Bypass, but were unable to make it a reality," Schaffer said. "During his service in Congress, David Hobson secured the necessary federal funds, promoting quicker and safer travel south of Lancaster and Columbus."

The second roadway dedicated to Congressman Hobson is a strip of Interstate 70 in Springfield, near where he and Carolyn, his loving wife of 65 years, resided.

Senate Bill 52 now goes to the Ohio House for further consideration.
