COLUMBUS - State Senator Tim Schaffer (R-Lancaster) and State Rep. Al Cutrona (R-Canfield) have introduced legislation that removes sales tax from firearms and ammunition and provides tax incentives for firearm industry manufacturers in Ohio.

“I am proud to work with Representative Cutrona on removing burdensome taxation on Ohioans exercising their Second Amendment right,” Schaffer said. “This is the least we can do to make owning a firearm for self-defense, hunting, and sport more affordable for the average Ohioan.”

In addition to removing the sales tax from guns and ammunition, the legislation also provides firearm and ammunition manufacturers with a tax credit that would offset the federal excise tax imposed on these manufacturers. This would make Ohio more competitive with other states.

“We are enforcing the constitutional rights of our citizens with this legislation,” Cutrona said. “This will not only lower costs for Ohioans, but it will also assist Ohio’s businesses.”

If passed, this would make Ohio one of the first states to exempt Second Amendment-protected goods from sales tax.

The legislation is in both chambers awaiting committee hearings.
