COLUMBUS—On Wednesday, State Senator Tim Schaffer (R- Lancaster) recognized the 2019 Fairfield Union FFA Forestry Management Team and the Ohio Division I Cross Country State Champion, Matt Duvall from Pickerington High School North during session.

The Fairfield Union FFA Forestry Management CDE Team was the state champion and placed 12th nationally during the national FFA competition. Only being in existence for five years, the team won the school’s first state championship in a career development event since 1975.

Of note, Fairfield Union had three of the top five state finishers: Nick Barrett was the individual state champion and placed 23rd nationally, Ben Beiter placed 3rd and Josh Starner placed 4th in the state competition.

Matt Duvall, a senior at Pickerington High School North, was the state champion at the 2019 Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Cross Country State Championship. A four time state qualifier and 7th place finisher last year, Matt outran 186 other runners to win the Division 1 championship with a time of 15 minutes, 13 seconds.

“I was proud to have Matt with me at the Statehouse. His hard work and leadership are a tremendous source of pride and an outstanding reflection on himself, his family, teammates, coaches, school, and community” said Schaffer. “I wish these students all the best in their future endeavors and thank them for visiting us."
