COLUMBUS—State Senator Tim Schaffer today introduced legislation that will provide a $500 non-refundable tax credit to volunteer firefighters to purchase safety or protective gear for use with firefighting related operations.

“The number of volunteer firefighters in the state of Ohio is dwindling,” Schaffer said. “We need to ensure that these volunteers are compensated for some of the personal funds they use to purchase equipment for their services which protect Ohioans on a day-to-day basis. It is our duty to show our support and offer this option for all volunteer firefighters.”

Antrim Community Volunteer Fire Chief and President of the Guernsey County Firefighters Association, Donald Warnock expressed support for Senate Bill 286.

“Residents of the State of Ohio enjoy the safety and security provided by volunteer firefighters. Many of these outstanding public servants invest significant personal financial resources, in addition to countless hours, acquiring advanced training, protective gear and communication equipment,” Warnock said. “This $500 tax credit to our volunteer firefighters is a vital step in reducing the obstacles faced by many departments when attempting to recruit new volunteers.”
