COLUMBUS—State Senator Tim Schaffer (R-Lancaster) announced today that he will be joining members of the Ohio National Guard at the SE Ohio Foodbank in Hocking County on Thursday, April 16th to tour the facility and assist in packing boxes for local families in need.

“The Ohio National Guard is stepping up to the plate to fulfill a critical need for families across Ohio,” said Schaffer. “I am grateful for the opportunity to join them in their mission to feed hungry families in southeast Ohio.”

Ohio National Guard members were activated in March through an executive order by Governor Mike DeWine to assist foodbanks across the state due to increased demand and need from the COVID-19 pandemic.

This week the General Assembly’s State Controlling Board approved $20 million in additional funds for fiscal years 2020 and 2021 to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) for food assistance programs. ODJFS will also receive an additional $4 million in fiscal year 2020 and $5.5 million in fiscal year 2021 for emergency food distribution. In the state budget, Senator Schaffer also voted in support of $1 million dollars in grants for foodbanks and pantries not affiliated with the Ohio Foodbank Association. Those non-affiliated food banks can contact the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services for more information on how to apply for grant assistance. Senator Schaffer will be available to media at the SE Ohio Foodbank this Thursday at 10am or by phone.
