Cutrona Addressing Denial of Law Enforcement Services for Private Schools in Townships
State Senator Al Cutrona (R-Canfield) will be introducing legislation to address the issue of chartered nonpublic schools, otherwise known as private schools, being denied access to law enforcement services, like local school resource officers.
This comes following an opinion by the Ohio Attorney General prohibiting private schools from contracting with local law enforcement to provide a school resource officer or other law enforcement services.
“Ensuring the safety of all students should be Ohio's top priority," said Senator Cutrona. “This opinion exposes our private schools to unnecessary risk and leaves them on the hook to coordinate security from outside their surrounding community. Addressing this issue in law guarantees that private schools in Poland Township and across the 33rd Senate District have the security they trust.”
Legislation mending this gap in law created by the Attorney General's opinion will be introduced by Senator Cutrona in the coming days.
