State Senator Al Cutrona (R-Canfield) issued the following statement regarding Governor DeWine's line-item vetoes in the operating budget related to property taxes:

I am committed to making sure that my constituents in The Valley and Eastern Ohio receive property tax relief that they have been demanding. I, and the rest of the members of the General Assembly, passed a balanced budget that included substantial property tax relief and transparency. The number one focus for my office during the past six months of this General Assembly has been, and will continue to be, property tax relief for Ohioans.

Governor DeWine's property tax vetoes are concerning to me and my colleagues. Among the reforms the governor vetoed are actions that would have contained the rate of growth of property tax across the state, added more accountability to local taxing subdivisions, and created more ballot transparency to levies.

Moving forward, veto overrides must begin in the Ohio House of Representatives, just as the budget bill did. While the Senate must wait to see how the House responds, productive talks about ensuring property tax relief for taxpayers has been ongoing between members in both chambers. I look forward to continuing the work I began at the start of this General Assembly to return Ohio's property tax system to its cost-controlled guardrails as originally intended.
