COLUMBUS—State Senator Al Cutrona (R-Canfield) announced that two communities in the 33rd Senate district will receive funds to help keep Ohio drivers and waterways safe in the winter.

The City of East Liverpool will receive $75,000 and Smith Township in Mahoning County will receive $47,300 to update their equipment and facilities to improve road salt management and reduce chloride runoff.

"Valley residents know how the winter months can affect our roads. It's essential we ensure you and your family are safe while traveling and preserve our beautiful waterways," Cutrona said. "These dollars will help East Liverpool and Smith Township accomplish just that."

These funds come from the second round of the H2Ohio Chloride Reduction Grant Program. The first round of grant awards were announced in May and, due to high demand, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency added a second round. $2.7 million will be awarded to 52 communities in Ohio through the latest round. In total, the grant program has distributed more than $4 million throughout the Buckeye State this year.

This grant program is part of the H2Ohio initiative, which aims to address water quality issues throughout the state.

"I've been proud to support funding for H2Ohio in numerous state budgets," said Cutrona. "Funds like these being awarded to our area shows just how successful the initiative is in helping all Ohioans in a variety of ways."
