State Senator Al Cutrona (R-Canfield) introduced Senate Bill 239, to incrementally increase the contribution amounts that employers of full-time municipal police officers must make to the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund (OP&F) and to make adjustments to the OP&F Board.

“Ensuring that our police officers are taken care of when they retire allows officers to have the peace of mind that they are supported by the community they serve,” said Senator Cutrona. “Raising the contribution rates local governments make towards their neighborhood police is long overdue. I'm proud to work on behalf of the police officers who selflessly serve the people across The Valley and Eastern Ohio.”

Senate Bill 239 will incrementally increase the contribution amount towards the OP&F for full-time municipal police officers from 19.5% to 24%, over a five-year period. The required employer contribution is an amount equal to a percentage of each employee’s salary. The bill does not change the amount employees must contribute to the fund. Additionally, the OP&F Board must establish a period of not more than 30 years to liquidate OP&F’s unfunded actuarial accrued pension liabilities.

The bill is currently waiting to be assigned to a committee for hearings.
