The Ohio Senate passed House Bill 124, co-sponsored by State Senator Al Cutrona (R-Canfield), which gives county auditors the responsibility to determine the sales data used to assess property values.

“House Bill 124 allows county auditors to flip the script by enabling local control in determining home valuations," said Senator Cutrona. “By taking the power away from the Department of Taxation, we can promote a system of transparency. The county auditors know their district better than any of the bureaucrats in Columbus and have the knowledge and first hand experience needed to make the best decisions for their communities.”

House Bill 124 requires that the Department of Taxation use a sample of property sales provided by each county auditor rather than selecting the property sales data from each county itself. The bill recognizes that local officials have the best knowledge of property sales occurring in their counties.

Under the bill, the Department of Taxation will enforce uniformity and have the power to appeal the values to the Board of Tax Appeals.

House Bill 124 now goes to the Governor's Desk for his signature.
