The Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill 156, sponsored by State Senator Al Cutrona (R-Canfield), which requires the Department of Education and Workforce to establish curriculum centered on the success sequence.

"Promoting the sucess sequence in schools gives Ohio's youngest citizens direction to make the best next steps for their future," said Senator Cutrona. "Providing students with the tools to steer them away from poverty sets Ohio's youth on a path to a brighter tomorrow. This bill gives our state an excellent opportunity to move a generation forward."

The success sequence is a three-pronged framework for youth and young adults that decreases the likelihood of poverty in adulthood. The system's three points for success are as follows:

1. Complete at least a high school education.
2. Obtain full-time work.
3. Marry before having children.

The bill instructs the Department of Education and Workforce to develop model curriculum on the success sequence for grades six to twelve with instruction provided on it in at least one course required for high school graduation.

The success sequence is a poverty avoidance measure; not following the sequence is not indicative of an individual failing to have a successful life. The bill seeks to provide students with all of the data so they can make informed decisions.
