Today, state Senator Catherine D. Ingram (D-Cincinnati) applauded the Senate’s passage of Senate Bill 326, her bipartisan legislation that would require each student who first enters 9th grade on or after July 1, 2029, to complete a half unit of instruction in computer science with AI fundamentals to graduate.

"Where a student lives shouldn't determine whether they have access to learning about artificial intelligence and computer science,” said Ingram. “Senate Bill 326 helps ensure students across Ohio have the opportunity to build these important skills and better understand the technology that is increasingly shaping our world. This is about giving every student in every community a fair shot at the opportunities of the future."

S.B. 326 would:

  • Require every public high school in Ohio offer a computer science course by 2028,
  • Exempt students who transfer to an Ohio high school during their senior year if they move from a state without a computer science graduation requirement,
  • Provide flexible options for students to meet Ohio’s computer science graduation requirement.
    • Students would be allowed to satisfy the requirement by completing 75 hours of structured instruction in computer science and artificial intelligence or by earning a qualifying score on an AP or IB computer science exam.

S.B. 326 now heads to the Ohio House for further consideration.
