Ingram Thanks Ohio Voters
Today, state Senator Catherine D. Ingram (D-Cincinnati) thanked Ohio voters for coming out to vote no on Issue 1.
"I want to thank the millions of Ohioans who came out yesterday and voted to defeat Issue 1,” said Ingram. “The turnout was tremendous and sends a clear sign to our legislature that Ohio is not interested in denying rights to our people or changing the rules of the game to favor one side. Seeing our democracy in action yesterday makes me very hopeful for the future of Ohio, and I urge those who so fervently came out in opposition to this attack on our rights to continue to stay engaged, stay informed, and stay optimistic that a better future will prevail in Ohio."
If passed, Issue 1 would have required constitutional amendments to receive 60% support among the electorate to pass, rather than the existing simple majority. Additionally, it would have required signatures to be gathered from all 88 counties in Ohio, rather than the 44-county requirement under current law, and eliminated the 10-day cure period during which citizens can replace any signatures deemed invalid by the state.
