COLUMBUS— Senator Jerry C. Cirino (R-Kirtland) announced the introduction of Senate Bill 461, the Strengthening Ohio Civics Act, which creates consistency and clarity for Ohio's Civic Centers.

The legislation seeks to close loopholes that were used to limit the intended authority of center directors.

"These centers were meant to be independent academic entities that taught foundational American history without the bias we've seen over the past few years," Sen. Cirino said. "We also want there to be consistency in the curriculum, which is why this bill charges the Ohio Civic Board with approving the curriculum for these civic literacy courses."

The bill also ensures Ohio's five Civic Centers would receive adequate funding by establishing partnerships with universities and the state of Ohio.

Senator Cirino also noted that this week is the anniversary of the Advance Ohio Higher Education Act, Senate Bill 1, and S.B. 461 is the next step to make sure higher education doesn't return to the past.

"While we want to partner with universities, we need these centers to teach consistent curriculum across the state and have the ability to operate independently without pushback," Sen. Cirino continued. "I look forward to sharing more about this bill with my colleagues as we move through the legislative process."

S.B. 461 has yet to be assigned to a committee.
