Cirino Statement on Rising Socialism Support and Education Reform
COLUMBUS— Senator Jerry Cirino released a statement regarding the rise of support for socialism, Education Secretary Linda McMahon's letter, and the need for his new higher education bill SB 461, the Strengthening Ohio Civics Act.
A recent poll by Axios-Generation Lab found that 67% of U.S. college students had a positive or neutral view of socialism, versus 40% for capitalism.
United States Education Secretary McMahon penned a letter to university presidents and governing boards asking them to reaffirm their commitment to academic rigor and free speech, after years of moving far to the left.
Here's Senator Cirino's statement:
"The decades-long indoctrination on college campuses has led to a concerning growth in support of socialism among young Americans. It's also why we're seeing socialist politicians like Zohran Mamdani and Abdul El-Sayed rise in popularity. These trends only further justify the need for the reforms brought by Senate Bill 1. And it's why the integrity of our civic education should be protected by SB 461.
These civic centers aren't 'conservative' or 'liberal.' They're simply providing an open forum where multiple opinions are welcomed and discussed and where no student should be afraid that their political opinion will hurt their grade.
Ohio is leading the nation in higher education reform. Even the Secretary of Education Linda McMahon is encouraging the principles of SB 1 all across the country. I look forward to seeing how we can continue encouraging academic excellence and freedom in Ohio."
The Strengthening Ohio Civics Act is the follow-up bill to SB 1, The Enhance Ohio Higher Education Act, which refocused the mission of higher education in Ohio to one of education instead of the woke levels of indoctrination that had infiltrated the faculty and their classrooms.
