COLUMBUS— The Ohio Senate passed Sub. House Bill 479, the budget correction bill, to wisely allocate the unexpected revenue this fiscal year towards tax relief.

The Senate Finance Committee, chaired by Senator Jerry Cirino (R-Kirtland), unanimously passed the bill yesterday with bipartisan support, which includes appropriating $1.5 billion of FY 26 surplus revenue.

"My colleagues and I were intent on using this tax surplus as prudently as we could," Sen. Cirino said. "We want these dollars to go back to Ohioans through the expanded sales tax holiday and direct property tax relief for Ohioans most in need."

Two key actions include:

  • Establishing a new Property Tax Relief fund with $350 million. This is estimated to provide a credit of $450 to every Ohio Homestead recipient’s January 2027 property tax bill.
  • $320 million for the existing Expanded Sales Tax Holiday fund. This requires a 15-day Sales Tax Holiday in August 2027.

"We've spent hours making sure we're being the best fiscal stewards possible," Sen. Cirino said. "I look forward to swift concurrence from the House later today."

The Ohio Senate sent the bill to the Ohio House for a concurrence vote.
