Senate Passes Cirino Bill to Improve Funeral Home Services

COLUMBUS – The Ohio Senate today passed SB 224 sponsored by State Senator Jerry C. Cirino (R-Kirtland.) The bill is designed to better equip funeral directors to provide the best service to Ohio’s families in their times of grief. Cirino collaborated with funeral business leaders to identify ways to clean up outdated rules and regulations, and strengthen and enhance Ohio’s state laws regarding the industry.
The bill bolsters and streamlines the law governing cremation standards; simplifies record-keeping requirements; ensures safety protocols for funeral processions; clarifies some licensing requirements; eliminates outdated signage requirements, allowing funeral directors to obtain fetal death certificates for grieving parents; and provides other changes to smooth the process for all grieving customers.
"Not only is SB 224 a business friendly proposal, but it is a consumer friendly proposal," said Cirino. "All of the proposed changes in this bill will benefit the more than 900 funeral homes in the state of Ohio, while simultaneously ensuring consumer protections are provided to the thousands of families that rely on funerary services."
This legislation has the full support of both the Ohio Funeral Directors Association and the State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors.
