Senator Cirino and Chancellor Gardner Announce Second Chance Grant

COLUMBUS—Approximately 1.5 million Ohioans, who have some college credit, now have an opportunity to complete their degree with financial assistance, thanks to the efforts of State Senator Jerry C. Cirino (R-Kirtland) and the Ohio Department of Higher Education. As a result of work sponsored by Cirino in Senate Bill 135, and $3 million appropriated in the state budget, the Ohio Department of Higher Education has launched the Second Chance Grant Pilot Program. The program utilizes the $3 million for financial assistance in the form of $2,000 grants to eligible students re-enrolling at a qualifying institution in order to obtain a degree or credential. “Chancellor Gardner and I share a vision to provide Ohioans an opportunity to earn their degree or credential at an affordable price,” said Senator Cirino. “The Second Chance Grant program not only will make that vision a reality for many Ohioans, it will also enhance Ohio’s workforce development efforts, which will propel our state forward.” “Education is key to a successful future, and the Second Chance Grant pilot program provides just that for many students – an opportunity for a second chance to complete a degree or credential and build a successful future for themselves and our state,” Chancellor Gardner said. Qualifying institutions must pre-register their intention to participate in the Second Chance Grant pilot program through completion of an online form. Pre-registration will open on October 8, 2021 and continue through December 15, 2021. Where possible, institutions are also encouraged to consider combining this program with other student recruitment initiatives, such as College Comeback.
