McColley Announces Ohio Senate's 'Heartbeat Bill' Heads to Governor

COLUMBUS—State Senator Rob McColley (R-Napoleon) today announced the Senate concurred to House amendments to Senate Bill 23, more commonly known as the Heartbeat Bill. The bill now heads to the Governor for a signature.
The measure would generally prohibit an abortion procedure from being performed if the baby has a detectable heartbeat.
"As Americans, the fundamental right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness should be guaranteed to all of our citizens, including those who have yet to be born," said McColley. "Life is a precious, God-given gift, and we have a moral obligation to protect these most vulnerable lives among us from deadly harm. As a co-sponsor of this important pro-life legislation, I am proud that we have taken this crucial step to protect the beating hearts of Ohio's children."
The vote follows the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal's decision to uphold pro-life legislation from the 131st General Assembly that redirects taxpayer dollars away from entities that perform or promote non-therapeutic abortions.
Since 2011, the Ohio Senate has had an overwhelmingly pro-life track record and has passed more significant legislation to defend unborn children than at any time since the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark abortion ruling in 1973.
