COLUMBUS—State Senator Rob McColley (R-Napoleon) yesterday welcomed Delta High School sophomore Zach Mattin to be recognized by the Ohio Senate for winning the 2019 Division III State Wrestling Championship in the 106-pound weight class.
"It was an honor and privilege to recognize Zach during today's session," said McColley. "With a family legacy as strong as the Mattins', I am sure they are equally proud of his outstanding accomplishment as we all are. I thank him for joining us in Columbus today, and I would not be surprised if we see him right back here again next year."
Zach wrestled against fellow northwest Ohioan Gavin Owens of Eastwood in the final, where he came away with the 8-1 win.
Notably, he was one of four Fulton County wrestlers to make the finals, including older brother Cole Mattin, along with Gavin Ritter and Xavier Torres of Wauseon.
The Mattin family has an impressive record of wrestling excellence with 6 state titles among him, his father and two brothers, Drew and Cole.
