COLUMBUS—State Senator Rob McColley (R-Napoleon) is encouraging northwest Ohio families to take advantage of this weekend's sales tax holiday, beginning Friday, August 3 and running until Sunday, August 5. Ohioans are expected to save millions of dollars on back-to-school items during the three day holiday.
"This weekend is a great opportunity for Ohioans to stock up on supplies for the school year," said McColley. "As a result of this tax relief effort, millions of working families in our state will be more empowered to send their children to school ready to learn."
The average family with school-age children planned to spend an estimated $673 on back-to-school supplies and clothing in 2016, according to the National Retail Federation.
All shoes and clothing priced less than $75 will be exempt from state and local sales and use taxes during this period. School supplies and instructional materials priced at $20 or less will also be tax exempt. Additionally, online vendors will be more affordable, as they will waive local and state sales taxes on designated items.
"The people of Ohio deserve to keep more of the money they earn, so that they can more easily provide these essentials for their families. That’s why I voted to permanently renew this sales tax holiday – so that parents can take advantage of these savings year after year," added McColley.
Earlier this year, the Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill 226, sponsored by Senator Kevin Bacon, to make the sales tax holiday a recurring event every year on the first weekend of August.
